What is Windows 8.1 Preview?

Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows RT 8.1 Preview are prerelease versions of Windows 8.1. They build on Windows 8 and bring you more ways to stay productive, have fun, and do all the things you need and want to do on your PC. Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows RT 8.1 Preview include enhancements in personalization, search, apps, the Windows Store, and cloud connectivity, and have the security and reliability features you expect from Windows. They’re fast, and made to work on a variety of form factors—especially the new generation of touch devices.


Is Windows 8.1 Preview ready for everyone to try?

We strongly recommend that only experienced PC users download Windows 8.1 Preview or Windows RT 8.1 Preview. Before you download the preview, you should weigh the pros and cons of installing software that’s still in development. If you install the preview release, you’ll get to try out the many new features, but you might also encounter errors that you wouldn’t encounter using a released version of Windows.

What languages is the preview available in?

Windows 8.1 Preview is available in Arabic, English (US), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Will I be able to keep my files, settings, and apps if I install Windows 8.1 Preview?

If you start your PC from removable media that you created when you downloaded the ISO, you won’t be able to keep your apps, Windows settings, or personal files when you update. This table shows what you can keep when you update, depending on the version of Windows you currently have running on your PC.

How do l install Windows 8.1 Preview?

There are two ways to install Windows 8.1 Preview: through the Windows Store or through the ISO. If you’re running Windows 8 in one of the 13 languages that the preview is available in, we strongly recommend that you download the preview from the Windows Store. When you install from the Store, you can’t create installation media but must download the preview directly from the Windows Store. Do I need a product key to install Windows 8.1 Preview?

If you install Windows 8.1 Preview through the Windows Store, you don’t need a product key. If you download the ISO, you’ll need to enter this product key: NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F.
